Sprung
Project March 2008
We have been taking part in the
Sprung Project. As part of the project, a few improvers
and a few other people have had the chance to go to Greens Health
and Fitness club and do some 10am till 6pm dance and swimming workout
days. It has been good and we’ve learnt some new moves.
We did lots of different activities during the days; first we had
a warm up and practiced our sets. We did a bit of work with
Remady, a bGirl from Scotland. Its mainly boys who break
so it was really good to have another girl teach us. We did a lot
of complicated toprocking routines and learnt some new top styles.
Remady also showed us stuff that she had learnt with Lil John and
spoke about how we could create our own toprock sequences around
different concepts.
Then we did a choreography work with Lucy aka TrubL Roc.
This was really fun, we did a piece which she called “Intimate
Work”, but that wasn’t really its name, she was just
joking because at the start of it, we had to stand really close
together, as close together as possible and stare at each other.
We also did a small routine which we later added to our “Intimate
Work”. During this we learned a few new things which we could
use in our own sets in lessons.
Before lunch we went swimming. It was good as well that we used
the swimming pool and saunas, that was all good because some of
us hadn’t been swimming in a while, and some of us can’t
swim. Those of us who could swim had to start with about 12 lengths
of the pool, and by the end of the project we were having to do
30! Then after we went swimming we spent 5 minutes in the sauna,
then had a cold shower BRRRrrrr! followed by a session in the steam
room and then the Jacuzzi.
After that we had lunch at the café where you can order food
(cheesy chips)Evil Genius’s chilli took forever
to turn up on the last day so he didn’t get much time to let
his food go down and we all suffered the consequences for the rest
of the afternoon! We went back up to Studio 2 for a class with Pervez.
He taught us a routine and how to burst into a circle; it was knackering
– he didn’t stop! We did a lot of direction changes
in our toprocking which gave us blisters and Pervez
said that we need to have more attack when we dance so he worked
us hard. We finished off his lessons with a quick battle.
With Lil Tim, we did cartwheels across the room
and then we did different ways of getting in and out of them, and
other drills. His continuous cartwheels are very very very fast
indeed – like a runaway cartwheel infact! After, he helped
us with things we struggled with. Lil Tim helped
us develop our own stuff. He helped us with our backspins, our windmills,
90s and pumps to improve the technique of our moves.
We finished each day with a warm down and went home to a thoroughly
earned rest; we were all very tired but pleased that we had been
given the opportunity to take part. We all really enjoyed doing
the Sprung project, over all, the experience we’ve been through
has been good, well worth it, and lots of fun. We have been able
to learn from the tutors’ own experiences and personal techniques.
We hope to be using our new knowledge in future battles and at our
improvers classes. Altogether the project was really good, and really
fun.
