Breakin'
Bread - July 2009

After a hard session training,
and then teaching at Bodywork, we set off at around 9.20pm. We spilt
into the two different cars and headed for the Jazz Café
in London but first we needed to hit the Welcome Break toilets and
KFC. So once again, we set off but this time munching on some sweet
tasting chicken and at the same time making sure we all knew the
running order by reading it through with each other. We were nearly
there and started mentally preparing ourselves individually, anticipating
the night ahead.

When we arrived there was a great atmosphere but not many people,
although it soon filled up and became livelier. It felt good to
finally stretch our legs after the long car journey; after all they
were going to be doing a lot of the work! We had a little trouble
getting in because it was an over 18’s club but it worked
out fine as we were on the list of performers. We checked off our
names and got a few odd looks from older people, and then found
a corner and started a top-rocking circle to get us ready. People
gradually began to pull in closer to our circle, intrigued and seemed
to enjoy our funky steps.
After a few quick stretches and listening to the live band it was
time for our performance. The lino was rolled out and stuck down
(Old Skool!) as we lined up behind it nervously. We were dancing
to a live funk band and our 15-20 minute set throwdown pleased the
crowd and got them screaming as much as we could have hoped it to.
Even TrubL Roc said it was better than in any of the rehearsals!
As for Method, it was his first JNR's booking and he was a bit nervous
just before the performance but once we had started and we doing
our thing, all the nerves went away and we all had lots of fun.
Method was very pleased that he remembered all his sets and felt
it went very well as the crowd seemed to love it.

We were all in a very good mood after our performance and started
bugging out to some well deserved MJ, remembering his funky ways
and that look on his face that TrubL Roc had supplied upon her t-shirt.
The really tall drummer from the Killer Meters looked amazing in
his red suit jacket and massive top hat with no shirt on and we
all noted his words to “Its Just Begun” sat on the floor
next to him. It was absolutely amazing and inspiring, to see somebody
perform with so much energy and UMPH creating the perfect atmosphere
to just completely go crazy!

On the way home, we were all really tired and hungry so we grabbed
some snacks and crispy crème donuts from the garage (after
being attacked by a bush) and slept and ate most of the way home.
We can’t wait to do it all again soon!
